Thoughts on Today’s Verse…
Putting Off the Old Self: A Daily Surrender
Paul offers us a profound challenge in Ephesians 4:22-24, encouraging us to reflect deeply on our spiritual walk. Let’s take each of these verses one day at a time, beginning with the call to “put off your old self.”
When we surrendered our hearts to God, our old selves were crucified with Christ (Romans 6:6). This transformation marked the beginning of a new life in Him. Yet, Jesus reminds us that surrendering is not a one-time decision; it is a daily commitment (Luke 9:23). Every day, we are called to set aside the sinful patterns of our old lives and intentionally choose to live for Jesus, motivated by the boundless grace of God.
Why is this daily “putting off” so crucial? Our lives before being united with Christ were influenced by sin and deceitful desires, tools the evil one uses to try and draw us back. Without this conscious effort to turn away from our old ways, we risk falling into those familiar traps.
As we embark on this new year, let us resolve to make daily surrender a spiritual habit. Each morning, let us offer ourselves to the Lord with joyful hearts, determined to live under His lordship and guidance. In doing so, we can walk in the freedom, grace, and joy that come from living for Christ.
My Prayer…
A Prayer of Daily Surrender
Holy and Almighty Lord,
I come before You as my loving Abba Father, seeking to honor Your name and Your will in my life. Strengthen me to resist the temptations of the evil one, who seeks to deceive and draw me back into the corrupt ways of my life before Jesus.
Empower me, Lord, through Your Holy Spirit. Shape me to reflect the character of Jesus as Your grace captivates my heart. Each day, I desire to live fully for You, honoring the sacrifice of Your Son and surrendering to the guidance and influence of the Spirit.
I pray this in the name of Jesus, through the intercession of the Spirit, and under the authority of the Son. Amen.
